Firstly, just what is a sportive?

Now we’re sure the majority of you reading this will likely know what a sportive is, but for the newer cyclists amongst you, it perhaps needs a bit more explaining.

It’s NOT a race.

Well, that’s what the event organisers will tell you and have you believe anyway. Mainly because as soon as the word ‘race’ is attached to a cycling event all sorts of legal and health & safety measures have to be put in place and followed, which can make organising cycling events very difficult and expensive. Many cyclists however still treat a sportive as a race. You know who you are!

Still a little unsure on what exactly a sportive is? Well the best way we’ve heard it explained is:

sportives are to cyclists what marathons are to runners’.

The majority of marathon runners are not racing; they’re just trying to finish. If they are competing they’ll likely be competing with themselves by trying to beat their PB for the distance, or the time they set on the previous occasion they completed the event.

So in a nutshell, a sportive is a non-competitive (sort of) long distance cycling event.

We're big fans of them because:

  • You can generally choose the distance you want to ride (normally long - 100k, medium - 50k or short rides - 20k, are available).
  • The route is all planned out for you, with marshals, mechanical support and feeding stations.
  • It gives you the opportunity to meet people who share your passion for cycling.
  • Most sportives give out a few freebies at the end ;-)

But the thing we love the most about sportives is that you get to escape to parts of the country you may not have cycled in before, or even visited! Without a care in the world (other than your aching legs) you can indulge in your passion, whilst taking in some stunning scenery.

It's simple - On our bike for a long time + beautiful scenery + a sense of achievement = HAPPY!

Each month we will bring you the Sportives taking place in the South of England (near our neck of the woods) so that we can help you plan for your season/year of sportives!
